“Got a Minute?” with M.J. student Olga Kozarezova
Welcome to the second season of 鶹 Law’s “Got a Minute?” series. Like last year, we’ll find students throughout William H. Gates Hall and ask them 20 questions about their law school experience, a bit about themselves and occasionally drop in a pop quiz or two.
This week, we’re featuring Olga Kozarezova, an M.J. student.
鶹 Law: Are you originally from Seattle, and if not, where?
Olga Kozarezova: No, I am originally from Russia in a city called Bryansk. My family’s Russian.
鶹 Law: What's one interesting fact about where you're from?
OK: My city was founded in the year 985, so it's 1,040 years old.
鶹 Law: Did you take time off between undergrad and grad school?
OK: Yes, it was about a six-year gap. I didn't really have plans to go to grad school. And then, I got this thought in my head, “Hey, why don't I do something and go back to grad school?”
鶹 Law: How many glass structures are in the courtyard?
OK: Oh, yeah, this is the question that trips everyone up. There's four.
鶹 Law: If you weren't pursuing a law degree, what would you be doing instead?
OK: I've been working in HR for nine years. So, there's a couple of different grad degrees that an HR person could pursue. Maybe instead of the M.J. program, where I focus more on laws related to employment law, I would focus on organizational design. That's another grad degree that people in HR often get. So, grad school would be the alternative, just a different program.
鶹 Law: What's one interesting thing you've covered so far in your classes this quarter?
OK: I would say my labor relations class is one that I've really come to appreciate. There's this sentiment in HR that labor unions are the bane of our existence, but the fundamental reason why labor relation laws exist is really to protect the economy and interstate commerce. So, I found that to be interesting.
鶹 Law: Where’s your favorite spot on the 鶹 campus, excluding William H. Gates Hall?
OK: Let's go with the quad. I love the quad. It has a special place in my heart.
鶹 Law: When did William H. Gates Sr., the namesake of 鶹 Law’s home, graduate from 鶹 Law?
OK: 1950.
鶹 Law: Correct. Which class have you laughed the most in?
OK: I can give you two. Federal income tax with Professor Hatfield, and then negotiations with Brian Muchinsky. Both of them have this hilarious, dry wit, sarcastic humor.
鶹 Law: What year was the Supreme Court established?
OK: 1789.
鶹 Law: Correct again. Are you an umbrella or raincoat type of person?
OK: Umbrella all the way. No shame.
鶹 Law: What's your favorite memory from law school so far?
OK: I would say Orientation Week last year was super fun. The people who run it do a great job of welcoming new students into the 鶹 Law community. And I met some great friends that week. So, I loved that time.
鶹 Law: If you could add a new class to the curriculum, what would it be called?
OK: I would love a biblical/Old Testament view of laws, specifically a class that analyzes Old Testament laws into three groupings: moral, civil and ceremonial laws. I guess the one that would probably be most pertinent to law schools would be the civil ones. So, yeah, I'd be interested in that.
鶹 Law: What's one thing that every visitor to the Puget Sound area should go see or do?
OK: One of my favorite places to recommend to people, especially in the summer, is Ebey’s Landing on Whidbey Island. You can see the whole Olympic Peninsula. And there's a little trail that goes up the hill, where you get this beautiful view. It's one of my favorite spots in the Pacific Northwest. If you haven't gone, I absolutely recommend it.
鶹 Law: What's a fun thing you like to do on the weekends?
OK: I like to go out for a run. We’re so blessed to have such beautiful nature here that it's great to enjoy it while you're exercising.
鶹 Law: What's one class you're hoping to take while you're here?
OK: Since I'm in HR, employment law is a must, and I plan to take that in the spring. I'm really looking forward to taking that with Professor Hotchkiss.
鶹 Law: What's more peculiar, the fact that “Law” starts with an “L” and the building is shaped like an “L”, or that our dean has the word “Law” in her last name?
OK: The fact that the building is shaped like an “L”, I don't think that's peculiar. I think that was deliberate, in a sense, but it's definitely peculiar and cool that the dean has the word “Law” in her last name.
鶹 Law: If you could have any superpower, besides flying, what would it be?
OK: Probably teleportation. I just feel like the amount of time we waste getting from one place to another is so unfortunate. So, I would just teleport myself to places.
鶹 Law: What was the name of Elle Woods’s dog on “Legally Blonde”?
OK: Bruiser woods. I love that movie.
鶹 Law: What's one interesting thing about you that people may not know?
OK: I am a super neat and organized person, and I like to have everything around me be clean. It's not OCD, it's just a part of me.
