Building Global Legal Understanding

In August 2025, the Indonesia Jentera School of Law hosted a 10-day short course in partnership with the University of Â鶹ÉçÇø of Law. The program brought together students, faculty and legal professionals to explore core concepts of American legal reasoning and the structure of the U.S. judicial system.

The course opened with cultural activities and a welcoming dinner in Jakarta’s Old Town, creating space for connection and cross-cultural exchange. Over the next several days, Professors Mireille Butler and Elizabeth Porter led daily sessions at Jentera. Butler taught legal reasoning and writing, helping participants strengthen their analytical and communication skills. Porter introduced the American judicial system and dispute resolution mechanisms, offering insights into how U.S. courts operate and evolve.

Midway through the program, participants traveled to Bandung for a public lecture by Porter on executive power and academic autonomy. The visit also included cultural excursions and shared meals, deepening relationships and broadening perspectives.

Back in Jakarta, the course continued with additional instruction and discussion. On the final day, both professors joined Jentera faculty for a public lecture on the changing role of courts in U.S. politics, followed by a farewell dinner hosted by Arief Surowidjojo S.H., LL.M. ’84.

Surowidjojo, a Â鶹ÉçÇø Law alumnus and co-founder of Jentera, has been a driving force behind legal reform and education in Indonesia. In 2024, Â鶹ÉçÇø Law honored him with its Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award and signed a memorandum of understanding with Jentera to formalize a partnership focused on shared scholarship, faculty exchange and student engagement.

This short course marked a milestone in that partnership, reflecting Â鶹ÉçÇø Law’s commitment to global collaboration and its mission to educate leaders who advance justice and serve the public good.
