Students

As part of Native American Heritage Month, the KCSC Courts & Community Committee honored Alex Hillborn 3L with the Profiles in Courage Certificate.

Sustainable Development LL.M. graduate and Ph.D. student Isatou Jallow LL.M. '17 earned the prestigious Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Award.

The Asian Bar Association of Washington awarded scholarships to two outstanding students: Emily Kawahigashi 2L, who earned the Sharan A. Sakamoto President鈥檚 Scholarship, and Christine McFadden 1L, who received the ABAWSSD General Scholarship.

The 2019-20 Gregoire Fellows are: Celeste Ajayi, Kayla 'Auli'ilani Ganir, Mustafa Hassoun, Richard Kim, Christine McFadden, Kenneth Nelson, Kien-Thiet (KT) Nguyen, Gabriel Villarreal and Clara Virden.

Gov. Jay Inslee appointed Alicia Burton聽'99 to the Pierce County Superior Court聽she served聽two years in the Piece County Prosecutor鈥檚 Office.

Khalia Davis聽'16 signed on as director of corporate compliance and in-house counsel at Swinerton in Irvine, California.

Global law firm Latham & Watkins LLP promoted Heather B. Deixler聽'07 to counsel in San Francisco.

Col. Linell Letendre聽'01 was promoted to the rank of brigadier general in the United States Air Force.

Julie Markley聽'99, partner at law firm Perkins Coie, received the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association鈥檚 2019 Trailblazer Award.

Gov. Jay Inslee appointed Raquel Montoya-Lewis 鈥95 to the Washington State Supreme Court. She becomes the first Native American to serve on the state鈥檚 high court.

Louis Schotemeyer聽'04, associate general counsel at William Lyon Homes, won the Rising Star Award at the Orange County Business Journal鈥檚 10th Annual General Counsel Awards.

The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association named Jovita Wang聽'10, partner at Portland-based law firm Richardson Wright, one of this year鈥檚 鈥淏est Lawyers Under 40.鈥

In Memoriam

World War II veteran and Washington state legend Jim Ellis聽'43 died at age 98. Over his lifetime, he led myriad environmental, civic and public works efforts as part of a legacy continues to be felt throughout the state today.

Malcolm Edwards LL.B. '57 was an instructor of the University of Nebraska School of Law and widely respected as the architect of appellate law in Washington. He died at age 87.

Rachel Nussbaum Wichert聽'15 was a project attorney at Friends of Animals and passionate animal law expert. She died at age 47.

麻豆社区 Law Professor Emeritus Philip Trautman聽'54 was a dedicated, engaged educator who spent more than 50 years at the University of Washington before retiring in 2006. He died at age 89.

Tanja Vance聽'09 was an expert in immigration law and criminal defense who founded the Magna Law Group, PLLC, and German Dual Citizenship, LLC. She died at age 44.
