Barer Institute for Leadership in Law & Global Development Applying for a Barer Institute Fellowship
The Barer Institute focuses on the multidisciplinary role of law in promoting improved outcomes in governance and multi-dimensional development. The goal of the Institute is to support emerging lawyer-leaders committed to advancing justice, good governance and sustainable development in low- and middle-income countries and communities undergoing legal and institutional transformation.
The 2025鈥26 application cycle is now closed. We will begin accepting applications for 2026鈥27 on Nov. 1, 2025.
Candidates for the LL.M. Barer Fellowship
Criteria for the LL.M. Barer Fellowship include:
- A personal statement (1鈥2 pages) addressing the demonstrated need听in the candidate's home country for improved legal infrastructure in the areas of rule of law and governance, human rights and/or economic development and the听candidate鈥檚 commitment to and capacity for using the knowledge gained as a Barer Institute Fellow to address that need.
- A first degree in law or equivalent.
- A commitment to return to the home country or region for at least three years after completing the Barer Fellowship.
- Strong English skills. Candidates must meet the English Proficiency Requirements explained in .
- Evidence of leadership skills.
- At least two letters of recommendation from legal professionals in the home country.
- Official transcripts and degree statements.
- Resume or CV.
Finalists will be required to participate in an interview via telephone or Zoom.

Applicants to the Barer Institute Fellowship program need not apply directly for admission to the Sustainable International Development (SID) LL.M. Program. However, applicants who would like to be considered for admission to the SID LL.M. program and the possibility of a full or partial tuition scholarship support (without full fellowship support) may also apply for admission to the Sustainable International Development LL.M. program.
Candidates for the J.D. Barer Scholars Program
Candidates for the J.D. Barer Scholars Program should indicate in their J.D. application materials that they wish to be considered for the 鈥淛.D. Barer Scholars鈥 program. Admitted J.D. candidates who express interest will be provided with application instructions for the Barer Scholarship program.听
